At the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance (PRAA), our mission has always been to uplift communities through the preservation and celebration of Puerto Rican arts and culture. However, as we closely monitor the impacts of recent executive orders, it is clear that changes at the federal level could significantly challenge our ability to fulfill this mission. Whether through delays in funding, shifting priorities, or reduced support for critical areas like arts and culture, these shifts require us to come together as a community and find solutions that ensure our work continues to thrive.

The Impact on Nonprofits

New executive orders may create ripple effects that disrupt nonprofit services and hinder community impact. For those of us partnering with federal government agencies or relying on federal funding, the challenges may be mounting. Longer wait times for grant approvals, difficulty connecting with federal contacts, and strained relationships with government partners are just some of the issues nonprofits may face. These obstacles could delay or even derail essential programs and services that our communities depend on.

The arts and culture sector, which is central to PRAA’s mission, is particularly at risk. Recent federal changes suggest a diminished focus on integrating arts and culture into strategies for economic development, community resilience, and social well-being. Without federal recognition of the value of arts and culture, museums, libraries, and cultural organizations like PRAA could lose vital support. This shift threatens to impede the preservation of our heritage, the education of future generations, and the enrichment of our communities.

We cannot allow fear, uncertainty, or shifting policies to halt the critical work of promoting culture, education, and community resilience. Now, more than ever, we must come together to ensure that our services and values are not abandoned.

What Nonprofits Should Start Doing

In moments of challenge, there is opportunity. At PRAA, we believe this is a time to unify and take proactive steps to adapt and advocate for our communities. Here are some actions we encourage nonprofits to consider:

1. Advocate for Government Reform: Nonprofits partnering with federal agencies should engage in meaningful advocacy to push for reforms to government grants and contracting processes. Sharing specific examples of how reporting requirements or application processes can be streamlined is a crucial first step. These changes could help reduce administrative burdens and ensure timely delivery of funds to the communities that need them most.

2. Collaborate and Align: Collaboration has always been at the heart of PRAA’s work. Now more than ever, nonprofits must align efforts, share resources, and build coalitions to address systemic challenges. Collective action amplifies our voices and demonstrates the strength of our sector to policymakers and stakeholders.

3. Stay Focused on Community Needs: Despite uncertainties, nonprofits must remain steadfast in serving their communities. At PRAA, we are doubling down on understanding the evolving needs of our constituents and finding ways to adapt our programs to provide meaningful impact, even in challenging circumstances.

4. Highlight the Value of Arts and Culture: For arts and culture organizations, it is vital to showcase the tangible value of our work. By demonstrating the economic, social, and educational benefits of arts and culture, we can build broader support for our missions and advocate for their inclusion in policies and programs.

Why This Matters

At PRAA, we have seen firsthand the transformative power of arts and culture to unite communities, preserve heritage, and inspire future generations. As executive orders create uncertainty, our role as stewards of culture and education becomes even more critical. The challenges posed by recent policy changes are significant, but they also present an opportunity to innovate, collaborate, and ensure our missions endure.

Nonprofits like PRAA play a vital role in advancing community well-being, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering education. By advocating for reforms, aligning efforts, and staying focused on our goals, we can overcome these challenges together. Our collective strength will be our greatest asset in these uncertain times.

Let’s use this moment to reaffirm our commitment to community and culture, ensuring that our services and values are not abandoned. Together, we can navigate these challenges and emerge stronger, more unified, and more impactful than ever.
