Embracing Inclusion: How the Arts Can Lead the Way

In today’s ever-changing social landscape, organizations are being called to stand firm in their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). For arts institutions like the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance (PRAA), this is more than a trend—it is a responsibility deeply embedded in our mission.

At PRAA, we believe that the arts are a powerful force for connection, cultural representation, and social change. The stories we tell, the music we play, and the traditions we celebrate are meant to welcome everyone into a shared cultural experience. Yet, we also recognize that barriers—both historical and systemic—continue to exist for many in the arts and cultural sectors. Our role is not just to acknowledge these realities, but to actively create a space where artists, educators, and community members feel valued, empowered, and seen.

DEI in the Arts: A Legally Sound and Morally Essential Commitment

The discussion around DEI has grown increasingly complex in recent years, with some organizations scaling back their efforts due to legal concerns or external pressures. However, the truth remains: standing for fairness, inclusion, and opportunity is not just lawful—it is necessary.

Leaders in every sector can—and should—continue advocating for:

  • A greater diversity of voices and perspectives in their organizations
  • Equitable policies and practices that ensure fair opportunities for all
  • A culture of belonging where individuals feel valued and supported

What’s important is how we frame our commitment. The law does not prevent organizations from expressing support for these values, nor does it prohibit conversations about bias and the barriers that underrepresented groups face. The key is to approach DEI efforts with a focus on inclusion rather than exclusivity, and equity rather than preference.

PRAA’s Commitment: A Cultural Movement for All

At PRAA, our approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion is rooted in action, not just words. We don’t simply aim to “check a box”—we strive to create meaningful, sustainable opportunities for artists, musicians, and youth from all backgrounds.

  • We champion cultural representation by ensuring that Puerto Rican and Latino artists have equitable opportunities to showcase their work and contribute to Chicago’s arts scene.
  • We create fair and open pathways for aspiring musicians and artists, breaking down economic barriers that have historically limited access to arts education.
  • We cultivate a space where all feel welcome, embracing the idea that inclusion strengthens creativity, innovation, and community bonds.

For those who may hesitate to speak up on these issues, know this: there is no legal risk in expressing support for a more inclusive and representative world. There is only the risk of remaining silent when change is needed most.

As we look to the future, PRAA remains committed to preserving our heritage while expanding opportunities for all who wish to engage with the arts. Because when we embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion, we don’t just build stronger organizations—we build a more vibrant and connected world.
