Comic Book Creation Head Instructor

The Head Instructor is responsible for leading the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance (PRAA) Comic Book Cohort, a creative arts program designed to empower youth through storytelling, visual art, and self-expression. The instructor will cultivate a positive, engaging, and inclusive learning environment where students build artistic skills, confidence, professional skills, and emotional intelligence, while creating their own original comic books. This position is ideal for an experienced teaching artist who believes in the power of creativity as a tool for personal growth and community connection. Experience working with youth in educational, community, or therapeutic settings is required. Individuals with experience in art therapy, trauma-informed practices, expressive arts, or social-emotional learning are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Plan and facilitate engaging weekly 75-minute comic book workshops aligned with the program curriculum and learning objectives.
- Teach core comic book concepts, including storytelling, character development, illustration, panel layout, and visual communication using project-based learning.
- Foster a safe, welcoming, and inclusive classroom environment that encourages creativity, collaboration, self-expression, and meets the needs of diverse learners through differentiated instruction.
- Prepare lesson materials, organize classroom supplies, and complete approximately six hours of curriculum planning, preparation, and administrative tasks throughout the cohort.
- Supervise, mentor, and collaborate with the Assistant Instructor to ensure effective classroom management and student engagement.
- Communicate regularly with program leadership regarding attendance, student progress, program outcomes, and instructional needs.
- Integrate workforce readiness and career exploration into instruction by helping students develop professional skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, accountability, and creative problem-solving.
- Introduce students to career pathways within the creative industries, such as illustration, graphic design, animation, game design, and digital media.
- Provide constructive feedback that builds artistic skills, resilience, creative confidence, and models professional practices within the arts.
- Support student showcases, exhibitions, and portfolio presentations that celebrate student achievement and demonstrate learning outcomes.
- Minimum of 2–3 years of experience teaching visual arts, illustration, graphic design, or related creative disciplines.
- Experience working with youth (ages 8–18) in schools, community organizations, or after-school programs.
- Strong classroom management and facilitation skills.
- Excellent communication and organizational abilities.
- Ability to inspire creativity while maintaining a structured learning environment.
- Familiarity with careers in the creative economy and the ability to connect artistic learning to real-world opportunities.
