Carlos Flores: A ChicagoRican Story — Images of Community, Memory, and Resistance explores more than five decades of Chicago history through the extraordinary life, photography, and cultural work of Carlos Flores.

Born in Guayama, Puerto Rico, and raised in Chicago, Flores came of age during a transformative period in the city's history. With his camera, he documented families, neighborhoods, artists, activists, musicians, celebrations, protests, and everyday moments that together tell a larger story about migration, community, belonging, and resistance.

But Carlos Flores's story extends far beyond photography. He has been an educator, cultural organizer, advocate, and driving force in Chicago's Puerto Rican and Latino arts communities. His work in photography, Latin Jazz, Puerto Rican music, and community cultural development reveals an individual who did not simply document history—he participated in creating it.

Developed through nearly two years of research into Flores's photographs, family history, personal documents, archival materials, interviews, and oral histories, the exhibition brings these interconnected stories together for the first time.

A ChicagoRican Story for All of Chicago

This is a Puerto Rican story, but it is not only a Puerto Rican story.

Carlos Flores's journey intersects with the histories of Black and Latino Chicago, migration and displacement, neighborhood transformation, music and cultural exchange, civil rights and community activism, and generations of people who have struggled to create a place for themselves in this city.

To be ChicagoRican is to inhabit more than one place, history, and cultural identity at once. Through Carlos's story, the exhibition invites Puerto Ricans, Latinos, Black Chicagoans, immigrants, artists, activists, longtime residents, new generations, and visitors from every background to consider a larger question:

How do we create community, preserve memory, and claim belonging in a city that is constantly changing?

Migration, Family & Becoming ChicagoRicanFollow the Flores family's journey from Guayama, Puerto Rico, to Chicago and discover how migration, family, neighborhood, and cultural memory shaped Carlos's identity.

Through Carlos's LensEncounter photographs documenting everyday life in Chicago's Puerto Rican communities—families, children, streets, celebrations, businesses, artists, and neighborhoods—captured from the perspective of someone who was part of the community he photographed.

Community, Activism & ResistanceExplore a Chicago transformed by political organizing, struggles for representation, displacement, and community resistance, including images and stories connected to Puerto Rican activism and the social movements that reshaped the city.

A City and Its Neighborhoods in TransitionDiscover photographs that preserve places, people, and community life affected by urban redevelopment and gentrification, creating a visual record of a Chicago that has dramatically changed.

Music, Rhythm & Cultural ExchangeExperience another side of Carlos's cultural legacy through his decades of involvement with Puerto Rican music, Latin Jazz, Afro-Latino musical traditions, musicians, festivals, and cultural organizations in Chicago.

Building Cultural InstitutionsLearn about Carlos's work as an educator, organizer, and institution builder and his role in creating spaces where Puerto Rican and Latino arts and culture could grow, including his contributions to the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance.

Carlos's archive gives us more than a record of the past. It offers a way of seeing Chicago through the people who built communities here, created culture here, struggled here, celebrated here, and called this city home.
