About the Role: Puerto Rican Arts Alliance is seeking a passionate and experienced After School Matters (ASM) Art Instructor to lead a dynamic, project-based program for Chicago teens. This role focuses on collaborative mural creation and advanced art practices, guiding students through the full artistic process from concept development to final public presentation. The instructor will mentor teens in developing both high-level artistic skills and professional readiness, culminating in a final mural project and showcase.
Curriculum Development & Instruction
• Design and lead a 75-hour Fall/Spring and 150-hour Summer project-based curriculum centered on mural-making and advanced visual art techniques
• Teach skills such as composition, color theory, large-scale design, and material application
• Incorporate hands-on learning, critique sessions, guest artists, and field trips when possible
• Guide students through the full process of creating a collaborative mural or large-scale artwork
Mentorship & Youth Development
• Foster a safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environment
• Build strong relationships with teens, encouraging confidence, creativity, and leadership
• Support students in developing teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills
• Serve as a positive mentor and role model
Program Management & Administration
• Recruit and interview prospective teen participants
• Track and manage attendance, engagement, and performance data
• Maintain communication with program staff and meet ASM reporting requirements
• Oversee program materials and stay within budget guidelines
• Plan and execute a final showcase or public presentation of student work
Program Focus
• Collaborative mural design and execution
• Advanced studio art practices, including drawing, painting, and mixed media
• Cultural storytelling and community-based art
• Career exposure in the arts and creative industries
• Experience: Prior experience teaching, mentoring, or working with teens (ages 14–18) strongly preferred
• Artistic Expertise: Strong background in visual arts, mural-making, or related disciplines
• Commitment: Passion for youth development, equity, and culturally relevant arts education
• Skills: Strong organizational, communication, and leadership abilities
• Requirements: Must pass a background check and meet all After School Matters eligibility requirements
